{"id":7576,"date":"2019-01-01T19:14:14","date_gmt":"2019-01-02T03:14:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/?p=7576"},"modified":"2019-02-07T12:00:07","modified_gmt":"2019-02-07T20:00:07","slug":"out-with-the-old-random-links","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/out-with-the-old-random-links\/","title":{"rendered":"Out with the Old Random Links"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since it&#8217;s now 2019, it&#8217;s a good time to clear out some random links I&#8217;ve got bookmarked to show you.\u00a0 Here they are:<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 You can&#8217;t take an introductory psychology course without hearing about Zimbardo&#8217;s &#8220;Stanford Prison Experiment&#8221;, but in fact <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/s\/trustissues\/the-lifespan-of-a-lie-d869212b1f62\">many aspects were faked<\/a>.\u00a0 Part of the scam is that the experiment went so &#8220;badly&#8221; that it would be unethical for any other researchers to repeat it\u2014but not so badly that it couldn&#8217;t still be used to catapult himself to perpetual fame and glory.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 The hot <em>new<\/em> result in biology is &#8220;epigenetics&#8221;, the idea that (modifying the standard Darwinian picture) the experiences of one generation can affect which genes are expressed in the next generation.\u00a0 You&#8217;d never guess from the wild news coverage of this that the phenomenon has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wiringthebrain.com\/2018\/05\/grandmas-trauma-critical-appraisal-of.html?m=1\">never been convincingly demonstrated<\/a> in human beings.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Martin Gardner&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephenjaygould.org\/ctrl\/gardner_popper.html?fbclid=IwAR2jxWTm4QH0eG_5P1FWTP2XtvW1ib1dkcO3YVGdun8eDhckkc0dwW29kpo\">attack<\/a> on Karl Popper.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Llamas, the secret bioweapon for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-46078989\">producing vaccines<\/a> that work on all types of flu?\u00a0 I&#8217;m putting a question mark on this, only because 90% of the amazing news stories about medicine don&#8217;t pan out somehow.\u00a0 I wish journalists would write more news stories about the things researchers discovered 10 years ago that are now definitely curing lots of people&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Potoooooooo\">Potoooooooo<\/a>, a famous race horse and stud.\u00a0 Pronounced POT-EIGHT-OHS.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rithmomachy\">Rithomachy<\/a>, the medieval arithmetic battle board game, was apparently nearly as popular as Chess for a few centuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 An <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nick_kapur\/status\/1062823813338091520\">illustrated history of the American Revolution<\/a> by a Japanese book in 1861&#8230; in which the Founding Fathers battle various giant beasts.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Bitcoin is <a href=\"https:\/\/sluggerotoole.com\/2018\/10\/12\/bitcoin-must-die\/\">currently using half a percent<\/a> of the <em>world&#8217;s<\/em> electricity.\u00a0 Perhaps we shouldn&#8217;t be squandering the planet&#8217;s resources on a mindless race to manufacture currency that doesn&#8217;t actually produce anything valuable?<\/p>\n<p>[<strong>UPDATE 2\/7\/19:<\/strong> here&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/hackernoon.com\/the-reports-of-bitcoin-environmental-damage-are-garbage-5a93d32c2d7?fbclid=IwAR2qCgqmdnIZ0rDlZM7TWx3SJ9ep-O4g94p3d2Gs3hYVQZdR6fxUmXZbjF0\">possible rebuttal<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/digiconomist.net\/bitcoin-energy-consumption\">guy whose blog<\/a> apparently started this ecological alarm.\u00a0 Haven&#8217;t put in enough work to figure out who&#8217;s right here, but until then I&#8217;m taking these articles with a grain of salt.\u00a0 \u00a0 If anyone knows more about this I&#8217;d be grateful if they weigh in.]<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 In other cryptocurrency news: The (arguably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/11\/08\/opinion\/trump-attorney-general-sessions-unconstitutional.html\">unconstitutionally appointed<\/a>) Acting Attorney General was previously involved in a scam to try to trick people into buying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsbtc.com\/2018\/11\/16\/time-travel-crypto-once-backed-by-trump-appointed-acting-attorney-general\/\">time travel cryptocurrency<\/a>.\u00a0 Unbelievable!\u00a0 As if an AG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennessean.com\/story\/opinion\/columnists\/2018\/11\/16\/matthew-whitaker-view-marbury-supreme-court-decision\/2006821002\/\">disbelieving in<\/a> Marbury vs. #@*$^&amp;! Madison weren&#8217;t bad enough.\u00a0 (I knew about the UConn crackpot from when I decided not to apply to a faculty position there, but I had no idea these threads were connected&#8230;)\u00a0 Apparently it really is important to <a title=\"Breakthrough Panel Discussion on Time Travel\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/breakthrough-panel-discussion-on-time-travel\/\">educate the public<\/a> about why time travel is worth talking about but not really worth investing your retirement savings in.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 The Sabbath as a <a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/ideas\/lets-bring-back-the-sabbath-as-a-radical-act-against-total-work\">radical act of protest<\/a> against being treated as a slave by the economic system.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/nucalc.com\/story\/\">Graphing Calculator Story<\/a>, another radical act of protest&#8230; in favor of voluntarily working without pay?\u00a0 Hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 As for involuntary servitude, a cynical take on schooling: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ornery.org\/essays\/warwatch\/2006-09-17-1.html\">Part I<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ornery.org\/essays\/warwatch\/2006-09-24-1.html\">Part II<\/a>.\u00a0 As a lazy bright kid who didn&#8217;t do most of the homework I was assigned despite significant feelings of guilt, I 100% endorse these posts (except I disagree with the bit opposing standardized tests, and have some reservations about the section labelled &#8220;foreign kids&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Why <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/archives\/2018\/10\/07\/everything-you-know-about-stat\">state educational ratings<\/a> are measuring the wrong thing.\u00a0 As a libertarian magazine, Reason has its own biases, but it seems quite reasonable that we should control for different state populations, and shouldn&#8217;t count money spent on education (which is a cost) as if it were an educational outcome (a benefit).\u00a0 Don&#8217;t forget to click on the plot that shows their <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/assets\/db\/15371947998492.pdf\">new rankings<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 How the US Educational system does math <a href=\"http:\/\/www.de.ufpe.br\/~toom\/travel\/sweden05\/WP-SWEDEN-NEW.pdf\">word problems<\/a> completely wrong, by a mathematician from Russia.\u00a0 Come on, folks!<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard several times before that there are different potentially valid models of how to look at mental illness, but I think a few paragraphs in the middle of <a href=\"https:\/\/srconstantin.wordpress.com\/2016\/12\/12\/sane-thinking-about-mental-problems\/\">this blog post<\/a> give a particularly striking answer for what makes a &#8220;spiritual model&#8221; different from other approaches, namely that it actually engages with\u2014even when it does not agree with\u2014the <em>content<\/em> of mental issues in a way other approaches do not.\u00a0 (I don&#8217;t have any reason to think the author is a Christian, but I still found this helpful.)<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and Ivy League schools should stop discouraging people from being supportive to students with mental illnesses!<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/kajsotala.fi\/2017\/07\/how-i-found-fixed-the-root-problem-behind-my-depression-and-anxiety-after-20-years\/\">This account<\/a> of fixing an issue causing depression is also somewhat interesting, although I&#8217;m not sure how well the method would work on everybody&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 St. Shamus Young has an interesting series about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=11874\">procedural world-building<\/a> that I think is pretty cool; his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=12687\">autobiography\/conversion-story<\/a> is also worth reading through.\u00a0 Not for the slow of connections, though.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 An interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stanford.edu\/2018\/06\/21\/neuroscientist-balances-science-faith\/\">a Christian neuroscientist<\/a> at Stanford, St. William Newsome.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/gallantlab.org\/brainviewer\/huthetal2012\/\">brain viewer<\/a> that&#8217;s supposed to show you how different parts of the brain are mapped out, but I&#8217;m not sure my own brain is capable of handling the web interface.\u00a0 Let me know if anyone figures out how to actually extract useful information from this.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 A side effect of people becoming less religious is we start treating <a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/2018\/12\/andrew-sullivan-americas-new-religions.html\">political cults<\/a> as if they were a religious identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 St. Ben Sasse, Senator from Nebraska and St. John&#8217;s College graduate, had some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegospelcoalition.org\/blogs\/justin-taylor\/one-best-speeches-will-ever-hear-senate-floor\/\">balanced remarks<\/a> about the MeToo movement during the recent confirmation fight.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Tips for <a href=\"https:\/\/thewholestory.solutionsjournalism.org\/complicating-the-narratives-b91ea06ddf63\">more productive and realistic<\/a> political conversations.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/works.bepress.com\/peter_elbow\/20\/\">Believing Game<\/a>, another conversational tool for identifying certain sorts of truths.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 A while back I gave some advice about <a title=\"Bible Reading Plans\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/bible-reading-plans\/\">how to read the Bible<\/a>.\u00a0 The same guy also asked about Church History, and I put off answering because I thought I might write a whole blog post on the subject.\u00a0 Ha!\u00a0 My actual recommendation is to start by reading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/History-Christianity-Lion-Handbook\/dp\/0745916252#customerReviews\">The Lion Handbook on the History of Christianity<\/a>.\u00a0 Then, if you are curious about some particular great Christian of the past, find a translation and start reading their work for yourself.\u00a0 If it doesn&#8217;t speak to you, pick something else.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 You know how in the Bible, when the king Jeroboam split Israel off from the southern kingdom of Judah, he set up an alternative system of worship involving a sycretistic hybrid religion where YHWH was worshipped in the form of golden calves?\u00a0 <em>[If the answer is no, click on the first link in the previous item.]<\/em>\u00a0 Well, archaeologists have recently found a payrus with some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblicalarchaeology.org\/daily\/ancient-cultures\/ancient-near-eastern-world\/israelite-psalms-papyrus-amherst-63\/\">creepy alternative psalms<\/a> from the Northern Kingdom religion.\u00a0 Although there are parallels to the Biblical Psalms, in these psalms YHWH is worshipped alongside other Middle Eastern Gods, and may be identified with a &#8220;Bull&#8221;.\u00a0 He is also portrayed as being satiated by bowls of sacrificial blood.\u00a0 I think most Christians don&#8217;t realize how a lot of the biblical Psalms (like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm+50&amp;version=NIV\">#50<\/a>) are polemics against this sort of crass religion.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 One of my ancestors, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findagrave.com\/memorial\/70620714\/aron-wall\">Rev.
