{"id":6568,"date":"2017-07-08T11:35:20","date_gmt":"2017-07-08T18:35:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/?p=6568"},"modified":"2018-07-17T05:46:51","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T12:46:51","slug":"random-linkiness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/random-linkiness\/","title":{"rendered":"Random Linkiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been <a title=\"Links of Randomness\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/links-of-randomness\/\">a while<\/a> since I&#8217;ve done one of these&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>My bookmarks folder wasn&#8217;t backed up when my laptop was stolen in March, so I lost a bunch of links, but I remembered some of the <em>really<\/em> cool stuff from before:<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 It turns out that if you expose a synthetic diamond to radioactivity, it generates an electrical current.\u00a0 Diamond is also pretty good at shielding certain kinds of radioactive rays.\u00a0 So scientists at the University of Bristol are proposing to convert radioactive waste into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jamesconca\/2016\/12\/09\/radioactive-diamond-batteries-making-good-use-of-nuclear-waste\/#78554fcea044\">diamond batteries<\/a>, as shown in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b6ME88nMnYE\">this video<\/a>.\u00a0 The batteries generate a very small amount of power, but would last for thousands of years, and would be safe to use e.g. inside of humans as pacemakers.\u00a0 <em>So apparently that sci-fi trope about using diamonds to generate power will be right after all!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 A searchable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/greatdatabase\/brzoaths\/public_html\/database\/index.php\">database of classical oaths<\/a>, which I found from the author <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jowaltonbooks.com\/\">Jo Walton&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><\/em>\u2666\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com\/2015\/03\/02\/why-our-children-dont-think-there-are-moral-facts\/\">Why Our Children Don&#8217;t Think There Are Moral Facts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve thought for a long time that the curriculum about <em>Facts<\/em> vs. <em>Opinions<\/em> harms critical thinking far more than it hurts it.\u00a0 Is something a &#8220;fact&#8221; (rather than an &#8220;opinion&#8221;) because it is objectively true?\u00a0 Or decisively proven?\u00a0 Because it is uncontroversial to a certain community, or can be used in an essay (aimed at a particular audience) as ammunition to support a conclusion?\u00a0 Because it has to do with tangible, physical reality, rather than being a normative judgement like morality or aesthetics?<\/p>\n<p>(For example, the Resurrection of Jesus is a <em>fact <\/em>in the sense that it is claimed to be about objective physical reality, it is a <em>fact<\/em> in the sense that it actually occurred, but it is certainly not an <em>opinion<\/em> shared by everybody and when talking to people outside of the Church, it is indeed the sort of <em>opinion<\/em> which requires backing up with other, less controversial, facts.\u00a0 Admittedly, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faraday.st-edmunds.cam.ac.uk\/CIS\/Wright\/pdf\/Wright_lecture.pdf\">St. N.T. Wright says [pdf lecture]<\/a>, this is kind of a category-bending &#8220;fact&#8221;, but there are plenty of other examples I could have used as well.)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well, you can&#8217;t expect elementary school students to understand subtle distinctions like the ones you&#8217;ve just distinguished!&#8221;\u00a0 But these are <em>completely different meanings<\/em> of the word, related only by metaphorical similarity!\u00a0 That&#8217;s like saying that you shouldn&#8217;t expect children to understand the fine distinction between <em>breaking<\/em> a glass and <em>breaking<\/em> the law.<\/p>\n<p>And now for some bookmarks on the new laptop:<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/mathwithbaddrawings.com\/authors-choice\/\">Math with Bad Drawings<\/a>, a blog by a math teacher sharing math [facts?\/opinions?]<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Did you know that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shepped.com\/german-shepherd-worth-400-million\/\">world&#8217;s richest dog<\/a> inherited his wealth from another dog?<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Meet <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Michell\">St. John Mitchell<\/a>, the clergyman who in addition to many other scientific accomplishments wrote the first paper about black holes, entitled by the impressively long title:<\/p>\n<p><cite>&#8220;On the Means of Discovering the Distance, Magnitude, &amp;c. of the Fixed Stars, in Consequence of the Diminution of the Velocity of Their Light, in Case Such a Diminution Should be Found to Take Place in any of Them, and Such Other Data Should be Procured from Observations, as Would be Farther Necessary for That Purpose.
