{"id":5004,"date":"2016-08-20T19:05:59","date_gmt":"2016-08-21T02:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/?p=5004"},"modified":"2016-09-17T13:32:36","modified_gmt":"2016-09-17T20:32:36","slug":"links-of-randomness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.wall.org\/~aron\/blog\/links-of-randomness\/","title":{"rendered":"Links of Randomness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u2666\u00a0 My wife has a new <a href=\"https:\/\/thevelvetpincushion.wordpress.com\/\">blog about quilting<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/news\/the-quantum-source-of-space-time-1.18797\">Nature article<\/a> describes the subfield of quantum gravity which I&#8217;ve been working in\u2014I know most of these people.\u00a0 This is a <em>lot<\/em> more accurate of a description than your average pop journalism article, so check it out.\u00a0 (Of course many of the ideas here are speculative and may turn out to be false.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 What if you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vox.com\/2016\/5\/19\/11683274\/aphantasia\">discovered<\/a> one day that everyone <em>except\u00a0<\/em>you has a magical superpower, and you never knew about it?\u00a0 A true story, flippantly described yet also deeply moving.<\/p>\n<p>(If you&#8217;re curious to find out more, here&#8217;s another decent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/04\/susie-mckinnon-autobiographical-memory-sdam\/\">article<\/a> on the same subject.\u00a0 <strong>[<em>Warning: includes gratuitous disturbing art involving surreal faces<\/em>]<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 This is the <a href=\"http:\/\/baynature.org\/article\/identifying-with-lichen\/\">best article<\/a> about lichen I have ever read.\u00a0 Well, maybe that isn&#8217;t all <em>that<\/em> competitive an award, but it&#8217;s still a pretty good article.\u00a0 The runner-up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/science\/archive\/2016\/07\/how-a-guy-from-a-montana-trailer-park-upturned-150-years-of-biology\/491702\/\">lichen article<\/a> is also pretty good.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 You already know that dolphins are really smart animals\u2014but that doesn&#8217;t mean you won&#8217;t enjoy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2003\/jul\/03\/research.science\">reading more about it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 One way to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2015\/04\/01\/education\/learning-curve\/american-students-head-germany-free-college\">go to college for free<\/a>.\u00a0 But not suitable for dolphins&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Once upon a time, people thought that Jews were naturally <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocietypages.org\/socimages\/2013\/11\/25\/when-jews-dominated-professional-basketball\/\">the best at basketball<\/a>, because of their short stature and scheming minds!<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 How we know that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrisstucchio.com\/blog\/2016\/robots_didnt_take_our_jobs.html\">robots didn&#8217;t take our jobs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The scary chart (the one that shows how, as a result of poor structuring of government programs, poor people can actually be <em>worse<\/em> off as a result of getting a job or a pay raise) is from <a href=\"http:\/\/johnhcochrane.blogspot.co.uk\/2012\/11\/taxes-and-cliffs.html\">this article<\/a>.\u00a0 Honestly, how hard is it to phase out programs gradually with income so as to avoid truly stupid incentives?<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 This <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2016\/07\/how-american-politics-went-insane\/485570\/\">critique<\/a> of our current primary nomination process, may have changed the way I think about politics.\u00a0 This article bothers me because, on principle, I dislike pretending to have a democracy when actually the important things are settled in the cliched &#8220;smoke-filled rooms&#8221; (I&#8217;ve disliked the Democratic superdelegates since I first heard of them) but it seems obvious in this election that that those methods have worked better.<\/p>\n<p>Also one could question whether &#8220;democracy&#8221; should really mean majority (or plurality!) rule when we are talking about the plurality of a minority (those who vote in a given party).\u00a0 The main way that the party establishment would like to modify raw democracy is to make the candidates more <em>electable<\/em>, which means in a way they represent the rest of the nation and make the results <em>more<\/em> democratic.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 How do you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.damninteresting.com\/this-place-is-not-a-place-of-honor\/\">warn people<\/a> thousands of years later about sites where radioactive waste is stored?<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Or for a more short term prediction about future developments: <a href=\"https:\/\/secure.flickr.com\/photos\/jonbrown17\/2571144135\/sizes\/o\/in\/photostream\/\">some predictions<\/a> in the year 1900 about the year 2000.\u00a0 About as accurate as these things ever are, i.e. not terribly but a few of them score some palpable hits.\u00a0\u00a0 (Here&#8217;s a <a href=\"http:\/\/yorktownhistory.org\/wp-content\/archives\/homepages\/1900_predictions.htm\">plaintext version<\/a> if you find the first one hard to read.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.math.ualberta.ca\/~mss\/misc\/A%20Mathematician's%20Apology.pdf\">&#8220;A Mathematician&#8217;s Apology&#8221;<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/G._H._Hardy\">G. H. Hardy<\/a>.\u00a0 Still contains a lot of truth today, although when he lumps Quantum Mechanics and Relativity in with pure mathematics, and says that at least these things can never have any use in war&#8230; well, I think we have to count that as another <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_explosion\">failed prediction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Interesting article in the NY Times about a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/07\/12\/magazine\/the-mixed-up-brothers-of-bogota.html?_r=1&amp;mtrref=undefined&amp;gwh=0EF04B35AF235C56E326C290ACB71136&amp;gwt=pay#\">two sets of identical twins<\/a> (2 x 2 = 4) where one twin from each set was swapped at birth, and what happened after they found out.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 An interesting series by St. Jason of <a href=\"http:\/\/triablogue.blogspot.com\/\">Triablogue<\/a> on some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/triablogue.blogspot.com\/2009\/08\/irenaeus-and-evidence-for-gospel.html\">less well-known evidence<\/a> in favor of the traditional authorship of the Four Gospels.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Does wishing to believe in religion put one in a better or worse position, for learning whether it is true?\u00a0 An interesting fictional <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=a-hJAAAAMAAJ&amp;pg=PA156#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\">dialogue<\/a> [google books] on the subject by a Catholic author.\u00a0 I read this on the strength of a quotation excepted at <a href=\"http:\/\/branemrys.blogspot.com\/2015\/01\/wish-to-believe.html\">Siris<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstthings.com\/blogs\/firstthoughts\/2016\/01\/of-course-religion-is-first-and-foremost-a-duty?utm_source=Main+Reader+List&amp;utm_campaign=641ec8d5e0-July+18_The_Week_at_Commonweal&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_term=0_407bf353a2-641ec8d5e0-91271245\">actual dialogue<\/a> about religion at First Things, with a Catholic and Muslim, both authors, about religion and their friendship with each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkcenter.org\/index.php\/bookman\/article\/nobody-expects-the-spanish-inquisition-to-be-explained-fairly\/\">Nobody Expects the Spanish Inquisition \u2026\u00a0to Be Explained Fairly<\/a>, a review of a book addressing anti-Catholic history.<\/p>\n<p>\u2666\u00a0 Speaking of agencies that use the methodology of <em>inquisition<\/em> (the accused must prove themselves to be innocent)&#8230;
